I can’t believe I haven’t shared my deodorant recipe! Here it is:
Easy Deodorant Recipe
What you need:
What you do:
- Rub on the coconut oil.
- Powder puff on the baking soda.
That’s it
If you want to get fancy, you can melt the coconut oil, mix in the baking soda, and even add essential oils. Then pour into an old deodorant container.
Coconut oil does melt when warm, so in the summer you may want to store it in the fridge.
And yes, it really does work!

I tried a recipe that included coconut oil, baking soda and cornstarch and it did work, very well. But then my underarms broke out. Do you have any suggestions? I would really like to try it again.
That happened to me when I used straight baking soda. Now I slather coconut oil on, and if I need extra protection I add a little puff of baking soda on top and with the coconut oil against my skin I don’t break out.
I had the same response to that combination…..very nasty sores. Who would have thought that something so natural would cause a problem! I will give the suggestion a try!
It could have been the corn starch. I’d use arrowroot which is gluten-free (and corn-free LOL).
Does this leave a bad residue? How well have you found it works? What kinda coconut oil do you buy?…Organic?
Thanks, Megan
No, it doesn’t leave a residue. You don’t want to slather on too much if you have a tight shirt, or the oil can transfer. I haven’t had a problem with it, though.
I buy coconut oil from Tropical Traditions here: coconut oil.
Oh ok
Thanks. I think I will do the method of mixing them together so I won’t have to worry about it. Thank for the link – but it didn’t work, can you relink it?
This is the best underarm deodorant I’ve ever used. Organic, unrefined coconut oil, baking soda, organic corn starch, and my favorite essential oil.
@Paula, was your corn starch organic? If not, maybe that caused the breakout?
Susan,
I would love to try your mixture above, do you mix it all together or do you put the coconut oil on first then the powdery part? How often does it need to/ can it be reapplied throughout the day? I am new to the whole idea of raw, vegan eating and am still a little in transition though I have cut out processed sugars, white flours, meat and most dairy. Will not being fully raw and vegan hamper the results of the deodorant mixture? Thanks, Peggie
I want to try this for deodorant but when I tried to stop using my old antiperspirant/ deodorant (Dove) and switched to a natural, aluminum free brand, I actually developed what seemed to be yeast in my armpit, yuk! I treated it with topical hydro cortisone cream just once and it went away. But feeling defeated, I went back to Dove
I slather on the coconut oil, then puff on the baking soda. Works great!

I just use plain baking soda. It’s the OIL part that gets me. I don’t want to ruin my clothes with oil spots or stains.
