After reading how harmful antibacterial hand sanitizers are, I decided to create my own.
Tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial agent that isn’t harmful to the body (like triclosan). I emphasized this in my hand spray.
Lea’s Safe No-Germ Hand Spray
Add together in 16 oz spray bottle (I used the one-finger pump kind) the following…
- 8 oz (1 cup) water
- 4 oz (1/2 cup) aloe vera concentrate (not the gel)
- 2 oz (1/4 cup) olive oil (or almond, avocado, or jojoba)
- 15 drops Tea Tree Oil
- 20 drops Orange Essential Oil
I like the aroma of the orange EO, but feel free to swap it out for another scent you like.
I have a small 2 oz fingertip sprayer that I got right at Wal*Mart. I keep this in my purse so when we’re out shopping or after gymnastics I can give the kids a spay-down when we get into the car.
It’s become a good habit. Why not make it yours?

I’ll give this a try – My mom has multiple chemical sensitivity and can’t tolerate most sanitizers.

Did you try it? How did it work?
I’m a bit unsure of one item…Aloe Vera Concentrate. Would that be known as Aloe Vera Juice Concentrate? I could find that, but I’m having trouble finding just an aloe vera concentrate. Where do you suggest buying it? Thanks!
Yes, Aloe Vera Juice Concentrate is fine. I get mine from Vita Cost. Here is the direct link: http://www.vitacost.com/Lily-of-the-Desert-Whole-Leaf-Aloe-Vera-Juice-Concentrate

Yes, absolutely!
Question – what does the olive oil (or other types) do? I find that it just sits at the top and makes everything feel very greasy. I had made it in one bottle and tried pouring into smaller bottle and without pouring it quickly and getting it all over the place, all I would get is the olive oil. Am I missing something. Thanks much! Very interested in alternatives to the Purell!
It helps keep your hands moisturized and not dry out. When you use a spray bottle and shake well before pumping, you should get an even distribution.
If you find it’s a pain, you can do without if you like
