I've been eyeball-deep in microbiology and ferments the past two weeks. I had just purchased some cabbage and was about to start my sauerkraut ferment when KerryAnn wrote her first post exposing mason jar ferments as less than ideal due to the lack of airtight seal.

KerryAnn is a friend. I respect her a lot. But like many of you, I was scared I would be harming my family's health, yet unable to afford an expensive jar. I was confused that a familiar method was no longer safe.

I was totally out of my comfort zone on this one - I admittedly didn't have enough experience with microbiology to know if she was right. Some of it made sense, but surely she was wrong on other points. I didn't like this torn feeling in my gut. I had to know. Is mold really that scary? Is oxygen really a threat? Are mason jars really evil?

This post is born out of endless hours of research gained, sleep lost, and too many hours of my children parked in front of movies. I thought some of you might like to read what I have discovered... Read the full post here →

Today we discuss remineralization and oil pulling.

Are you tired of finding hair in your food? Or having your hair get in your way just when you started kneading dough?

I have waist-length hair so I make it a habit to put my hair back in a twist with a large claw clip when I am about to make a meal in the kitchen. Finding a long strand of hair in your pizza crust just isn't very appetizing!

Apart from working in the kitchen, I often pull my hair up in a twist or some sort of a bun in the warmer months - my very long hair just gets too warm when it's hot and humid out. In fact most winter days I have it back as well, just to get it out of the way.

The only thing I could find to hold all my hair is a large claw clip. But I'd often find myself adjusting it once or twice a day, and if not placed right, I could feel it tugging at my scalp.

And then Paula Miller offered to send me a Lilla Rose Flexi so I could try it out. And boy am I glad she did! Read the full post here →

Most insurance companies pay for at least one dental visit a year, and still we're suffering from receding gums, teeth loss, and cavities.

I wondered about this, too, and have been researching the best methods of at-home dental care. I interviewed Ora Wellness recently and was able to pick their brains about some dental questions I had.

Nourishing Treasures: Why is gum disease so prevalent, even though most households brush regularly?

Ora Wellness: This is a great question. First off, gum disease is very prevalent. In fact, at least 9 out of 10 adults over 30 have active gum disease; 65% of 15 year olds already are afflicted as well! In answering your question why is gum disease so prevalent, Iʼm going to have to address several factors. Read the full post here →

I love their popcorn! Here is a press-release about their non-GMO corn products...

Tropical Traditions announced today that they were offering a new line of organic heirloom corn grown by small-scale family farmers in western Wisconsin. These organic heirloom corn products include Pride of the North cornmeal, whole kernel corn, and Lady Finger popcorn.

Organic Corn that is Truly GMO-free

Pride of the North organic heirloom corn and Lady Finger open pollinated organic popcorn is grown on small family farms with buffer zones, ensuring that the places where the corn is planted is not downwind from any other conventional corn fields that may be using genetically modified seeds. Watch the video below from one of the farms to see an example of how this certified organic corn is grown, and how they ensure proper buffer zones are in place to prevent cross contamination from other farms. The extra care they take is far beyond what is required by current USDA organic standards. Current organic standards do not require any special buffer zones for the growing of organic corn, therefore much of the supply of certified organic corn in the U.S. could possibly be contaminated by GMO cross pollination. Read the full post here →

You know, there are so many great books out there, and this is definitely one of the best.

Breast to Bib by Kate Tietje is a book I wish I had access to when I was pregnant with my children.

I was honored to be able to review Breast to Bib before it was published. You will find the following quote of mine at the top of the list under "Praise for Breast to Bib:"

Okay, I am in total love with your book. I have never been so happy with a book written about baby foods! I jumped on the "AP" bandwagon eight years ago, and have been immersed in all things AP since. I agree whole-hardheartedly with your breastfeeding advice, when to introduce what foods to toddlers, and your advice about supplements. Your recipes are easy to make and wholesome foods the whole family can enjoy!

You see, it's not very often you find a gem like this. Read the full post here →

Don't know how to make nutrient dense foods that taste delicious while staying on your diet?

Do you wish you had someone who's "been there" to hold your hand as you navigate through the store looking for foods that won't set off your sensitivity? Foods that are truly gluten and dairy free with no trace- and cross-contaminations?

Would you like to know the hidden sources of gluten and dairy and how to keep yourself safe while purging your kitchen, replacing your cookware, and even bathroom products?

Then you could use the Gluten and Dairy-Free Traditional Foods eCourse from CookingTF.com

Intro Video: How this eCourse came from KerryAnn's near-death experience

After her own near-death experience with gluten and dairy allergies, KerryAnn now shares with you the information she has learned on her road to recovery. You can now benefit from the education she went through while researching living with these allergies (and without sacrificing flavor in recipes!).
