The Difference Between Tropical Traditions’ Coconut Oils – Handy Reference Guide

From time to time I get asked, “what is the difference between Tropical Traditions’ coconut oils? What makes the Gold Label better than the Green Label? What about deodorization? Are they non-GMO?” This post will address these questions.

All Tropical Traditions coconut oils are superior to others out there, as the modern way of extracting coconut oil is by chemical extraction, and Tropical Traditions uses traditional processing methods without chemical solvents. All Tropical Traditions coconut oils are:

  • not hydrogenated
  • contain no trans fats
  • non-GMO
  • high in lauric acid
  • shipped in glass jars – no BPA worries!

Expeller-Pressed Coconut Oil, non-certified

  • Economical – does not include the cost of organic certification, yet the coconuts are from unpolluted areas where pesticides and fertilizers are virtually unknown
  • Made traditionally by expeller-pressed mechanical extraction
  • Deodorized by the traditional method of physical refining, not by use of solvents
  • Refined without chemical solvents
  • Retail $22.50, often on sale for $16

Expeller-Pressed Coconut Oil, certified organic

  • Certified Organic
  • Made traditionally by expeller-pressed mechanical extraction (same as above)
  • Deodorized by the traditional method of physical refining, not by use of solvents (same as above)
  • Refined without chemical solvents (same as above)
  • Retail $25, often on sale for $19

Green Label Virgin Coconut Oil

  • Certified Organic
  • Scent and taste like coconuts – not deodorized
  • Unrefined
  • Cold-pressed by machine
  • Made from fresh coconuts
  • Made in the Philippines under strict quality control procedures
  • Coconuts processed shortly after they are harvested
  • Retail $37.50, often on sale for $27.50

Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil

  • Certified Organic
  • Scent and taste like coconuts – not deodorized
  • Unrefined
  • Cold-pressed by hand
  • Made from fresh coconuts
  • Made in small batches from family producers - not mass-produced
  • Highest level of antioxidants
  • Retail $40, often on sale for $29.50
