Boy are you guys in for a treat! This week marks the first of three interview sessions with Shannon and Jeff Pearce from Cooking God’s Way. If their name rings a bell, it’s probably because I had nothing but good things to say about their wonderful air-lock system for fermenting during Sauerkraut Survivor (we’ll talk more about their system next week).
Today we learn how they got started, what they offer, and what misconceptions about health they would like to see go away.
At the end of the interview you will have a chance to win something great from Shannon and Jeff - so keep reading!
Lea: I first stumbled on your website when researching fermentation. I was hooked
You have some great articles about health and wellness. Tell me, what prompted you to start Cooking God’s Way, and what is your mission?
Shannon: Cooking God’s Way started as a giving back of what we had learned about health and living. Jeff, my husband, had been one of those people that never got sick was able to eat anything he wanted and appeared to stay healthy. Things changed for him around when he turned 40ish. Suddenly he had issues starting with blood pressure, weight gain, swelling of joints, memory fog, and other issues. These issues were very hard for him to deal with since he was always healthy and a long time runner. Depression set in and his weight ran up to 300 lb. We had to do something. He went back to the nutrition he had learned in his college days, but that did not work.
After searching and looking at many topics we found that the modern diet of America had changed from that of our ancestors. They ate whole foods, naturally grown, prepared and eaten. I realized that healthy foods should taste great, but equally important they had to be truly nutritious. When we started eating this way Jeff saw his weight issue lower and his health start coming back. It was then that we realized we had to share these healthy recipes by creating a website called Cooking God’s Way in 2009. We choose the name Cooking God’s Way because we see it as a question. “What would God choose to cook for us?”
1. …foods that are healthy for us.
2. …recipes that we like culturally.
3. …whole foods that are healthy for our bodies.
Out of this we realized our mission; “To educate individuals and families how to obtain healthy using real foods.”
Lea: Wow, that is very inspiring! Is this what initiated Jeff to become a health practitioner?
Shannon: Yes. Jeff went back to school to learn more about health and foods and later became board certified as a Holistic Health Practitioner. We now together hold classes and workshops in Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston on how to make healthy foods that our ancestors used on a daily basis. The local classes we offer are: Lacto-fermentation “Living Foods”, Sourdough Baking the Easy Way, Kefir “Live Drinks”, and Kombucha “Live Drinks.”
Lea: Does Jeff offer online consultations as well?
Shannon: Absolutely yes! Our desire is to help people, wherever they are. Jeff has health consultation programs for those that are local and those that aren’t local. He has and does work with people from all over the country. When he did his internship here in the Dallas area it was in a high volume Doctors office. So he has worked with a wide range of health issues from A to Z, weight-loss to cancer and everything in between.
Recently he has been doing a lot of consulting for athletes and you know what, they suffer from many of the same issues that everyone else does. This kinda surprised me as you think these perfect looking people would have to be healthy, but evidently health is more than just skin deep. He has such a passion for helping others that he tries to never turn anyone away.
For this reason he offers a Free 30-Minute Phone Consultation so that those interested in nutritional consulting can find out if it’s right for them. They can ask Jeff the questions that are important to them and their health issues before jumping right in.
Lea: That is a wonderful blessing. So often it costs $150 or more for a first visit before deciding whether or not together you are a good fit.
I have been enjoying your Nutrition and Food articles. I was shocked to read your article Dr. Oz says Coconut Oil is deadly!!! but relieved to hear he has now changed his position on coconut oil. What misconceptions are out there that you wish people knew the truth about?
Shannon: The biggest misconception that we at Cooking God’s Way have come across is that people do not understand that “they are what they eat”. They think they can eat whatever they want with no consequences. But we have to admit that you either pay now or later. If I am diligent and do the work now to eat wholesome foods I will be rewarded with health my whole life. The great thing is if a person makes the change today they can start enjoying benefits very quickly. I am often amazed at how quickly some of Jeff’s clients turn around. Just more proof that when you give the body the correct foods it in turn heals.
Lea: Oh, this is soooo true. Health is its own reward, and people truly don’t realize what a blessing it is to be able to not suffer from health issues. What is the key?
Shannon: Getting people to eat correctly is nothing new, Hippocrates said 2,500 years ago, “Let food be thy medicine and Medicine be thy food.” Kinda looks like there were some eating problems happening in his day.
We have seen how changing eating habits can do so much for a person’s health that we offer a free e-class on understanding food so correct choices can be made. I know very little about fermenting. Can’t quite get used to the taste (only tried it twice). Definitely would love the consultations. Thanks for giving one of us the opportunity.
I would love to win. I have felt bad for the past year and a half. I want to feel better so that I can run around and play with my children.
Would love to know more! Your article/interview was so informative, I would just like to know more about what they recommend. And how wonderful to have someone help you implement it in your family!
My daughter has ulcerative colitis with liver involvement, and I have autoimmune thyroiditis, and possibly celiacs. I am making big changes to our family diet this month and could really use some coaching.
I’m blessed to have family that is open to discussions about food and health. Over the past year or so my eyes have been opened to how much I don’t know in that realm. Right now, sprouting & fermenting are at the top of my list.
Consulting would be a great direction starter for my personal health.
I’m trying to learn how to eat real food, not only for myself, but so that I can teach my children to do the same, and possibly to help them avoid some of the health problems that seem to be creeping into our current daily lives. I’ve never really consulted a professional nutritionist, and I think actually getting to ask specific questions and HEAR the answers would make a huge difference.
I have been on Gaps for 2 and 1/2 years and can’t seem to lose any weight. I am still very tired. I have no energy and still suffer from depression and anxiety. I have had a lot of things get better, but I am still suffering. I am almost 60 years old and am giving up hope of ever getting better. I could sure use some counseling.
I would love to learn more about how to address certain problems that my family members have.
I want to win because, after a visit with us a few months ago, my daughter in love, who has been Type-1 diabetic since age 6, is wanting/needing to learn the role that nutrition is playing in her health. In her mid 20′s now, she is seeing more bad health effects than folks in their 80′s. She really wants to learn! If I won, I would give it to her!
