Enough has been said about the fallacy of low cholesterol numbers. But what do those numbers really mean? Should they be as low as doctors are currently recommending? Let’s take a look at what healthy cholesterol levels really look like:
Below age seventy, ideal total cholesterol should be between 180 and 200. Over age seventy, up to 300 points is ideal.
Your HDL should be above 50, and your LDL below 100.
More important than numbers are the ratios of HDL to LDL. To determine your cholesterol ratio, divide your total cholesterol number by your HDL number. If your result is 1.0 - 3.4 then you have below average risk for cardiac events. If your result is 3.5 - 5.0 you have average risk. 5.1 - 9.6 would be above average risk and high risk is 9.7 - 23.4.

I had a blood work up done last week and just got the results back. I’ve been on a real food diet for about 2 yrs so I am shocked at the results of my cholesterol. LDL - 353, HDH - 111, total - 558. My numbers weren’t this bad when I was on a lowfat, low cholesterol diet. What happened?
