I prefer cast iron for cooking, but baking? Give me stoneware, or give me death! I love using my stoneware for making everything from Pumpkin Cookies and Coconut-Orange Macaroons to Chia Banana Bread and Granola (no burning!).
Reason #1 - Perfect Crusts
My favorite reason for using stoneware is the amazing crusts that they produce. I am so glad to have white, soggy bread, pie, and pizza crusts behind me. Now, I have nicely-browned crusts that hold their shape.
Reason #2 - Magazine Muffins
Not only are they browned on the top, but the entire muffin has a nice golden crust to it. They stand nicely on their own without slumping over.
Recipe: Carrot Cake Muffins.
Reason #3 - Non-Stick Surface
Once you season your stoneware, you’ll have a non-stick surface that won’t wear out. Unlike Teflon, which non-stick surface peels off the pan, stoneware lasts.
How do you season? Lightly brush with coconut oil or palm shortening for the first few uses. This will help the stoneware to naturally season and develop a natural non-stick surface.
Reason #4 - Chemical-Free
Stoneware is made with natural materials and is chemical-free. You do have to consider the source, however. Stoneware made in the USA (Pampered Chef is USA made) and Canada has been tested lead-free, but stoneware made elsewhere has been found to contain lead. I found this out the hard way when I ordered stoneware from LTD - come to find out it was made in China!
Teflon, the other non-stick pan, is made of chemicals you want to avoid. Read: Teflon is Forever.
Reason #5 - Versatile
Safe to use in conventional ovens, convection ovens, microwave ovens, and even freezer-safe.
Reason #6 - Easy to Clean
Non-stick stoneware is a breeze to clean. Simply hand wash in hot water (no soap or detergents), removing any food bits with a nylon scraper. Pampered Chef stoneware includes a nylon scraper with each stoneware item purchased.
Reason #7 - Lasts a Lifetime
Stoneware is durable, and when taken care of, will last a lifetime.

I tried stoneware a long time ago and it didn’t work for me but I really think I did something wrong. Will have to try it again.
What pieces did you have?
I just bought a couple pieces! My mom has a pizza stone and has always loved it… I use cast iron a lot and have always wanted to get more “healthy” baking dishes. Looking forward to making some paleo bread and such in my new stoneware!
Hooray! I am so glad for you
If cast-iron won’t work for whatever, I use stainless steel or glass.
Stoneware is just too expensive and I never see it at flea markets and auctions like cast iron.
