Storing Water Kefir - what jars are best?

I planned to include this in my How to Make Water Kefir post, but it was already quite long. If you haven’t read it yet, you can do so now.

Above you can see my second ferment when it is finished. Here I am filling jars to put in my refrigerator.

On the left is a swing-top jar that I fill using a narrow funnel (I am upgrading to this dual-purpose stainless one). On the right is a 1/2 gallon mason jar with a regular wide-mouth funnel that I have since upgraded to this funnel.

The swing-top is fun for toting on outings. I use the mason jar to hold extra water kefir that doesn’t fit in my refrigerator jar, which I’ll show you in a minute.

For the mason jar, I pull a snack baggy over the top since I have learned a plain white lid is not airtight, and I want to keep the CO2 bubbles in.

Then I screw on a white lid. Sometimes I will use a dry erase marker to note the flavor or date.

My favorite jar to use for pouring kefir (or milk, or anything) is this Fido refrigerator jar. It is airtight, and the pour spout makes for drip-less pouring. I like the 1/2 gallon size, but I also want to get my hands on the quart size as well.

I love that my 8yo can pour herself a glass without spilling a drop - as opposed to even me, as a mom, spilling teaspoons each time I pour out of a 1/2 gallon mason jar.

This refrigerator jar holds the water kefir we’re currently enjoying, with the mason jar as a back-up, ready to dump in.

The top has a unique design. You can turn the top to loosen and remove, then replace and turn the top back the other way to tighten.

This also makes it easy to control how airtight you want it.

You can, of course, also store them in a Fido jar. The photo above is my second ferment on my shelf, but these can also go in the fridge.

Now that I have plenty of Fido’s, I can use them in the fridge, too, for my extra water kefir.

What do you store your water kefir in?

Storing Water Kefir - what jars are best? — 2 Comments

  1. I store my water kefir in 1-liter flip (swing) top bottles, like the one on the left in your first photo. I really like the idea of the Fido Refrigerator Jug, though I am not sure which size would be best. I would like my kids, an 11 year old and a 14 year old to both be able to pour from it easily. SO I guess weight and bulk would be my concern. Lea, which size would you recommend?
