Most of you have probably heard of soap nuts, especially if you have been researching natural laundry detergent alternatives.
If you have yet to swap your laundry soap over to a more natural method you will want to keep reading!
I will tell you what soap nuts are, how I use them, how long they last, if they are economical, and more…
Nature’s Laundry Soap - Soap Nuts
USDA Certified Organic, NaturOli Soap Nuts are safe and clean - for you and for the environment.
The world’s finest soap nuts, NaturOli Soap Nuts are fair-trade harvested from the Sapindus Mukorossi when they are fresh, large, and plump. They are then sorted by hand, inspected, and packaged in the USA.
Free of any chemicals or fragrances, NaturOli Soap Nuts are perfect for those with sensitive skin or who suffer from allergies.
Using NaturOli Soap Nuts reduces scummy build-up and musty odors that regular detergents can promote.
How I use Soap Nuts
NaturOli Soap Nuts come in a muslin draw-string bag, along with a smaller bag to place the soap nuts in. This little bag you toss in your washer with your clothes.
You are supposed to let them air-dry between uses, but I cheat and often toss them in the dryer along with the clothes. Lazy, I know! But it works
How long do Soap Nuts last?
5 soap nuts lasts me about a week’s worth of laundry (7+loads) before I add another 5 nuts to the bag. You can tell when they are soft and deteriorating that you need to add more. They can be replaced, if you want, instead of just adding to the bag. I think I already mentioned how lazy I am
Are Soap Nuts Economical?
You bet!
It’s not often you come across a natural laundry detergent that is affordable. I mean that would be too good to be true, right? Fortunately for us, it is true.
Here’s the math…
I use 5 NaturOli soap nuts (1/2 ounce), and these last me seven loads.
A 1-pound bag contains approximately 160 soap nuts and will provide 224 loads for me (my water is full of minerals, so if you have soft water, you could get more loads out of five soap nuts). NaturOli’s one-pound bag is $22.95, and comes out to $.10/load.
For more savings, you can purchase a 2 or 3 pound bag and that brings the cost down to $.075 and $.06/load, respectively.
For comparison purposes, I looked up All Free & Clear on amazon (I used to buy this eons ago) and found that for $13.75 you can get 32 loads and it comes out to $.42/load. You can probably find it for less in Wal*Mart, but even if it was half the price, it’s still double the cost of soap nuts, and full of chemicals!
What About Nut Allergies?
Soap nuts aren’t “nuts” at all, but the fruits of the tree that are de-seeded before use. Maybe they should be called “soap berries!” So if you have allergies, you have nothing to fear
Award-Winning
Did you know NaturOli Soap Nuts are award-winning? This summer NaturOli Soap Nuts were selected by the LA Times as a Top 4 gray-water safe detergent. PLUS NaturOli tied for first place for lowest cost per load!
These will work well in all front-loading washing machines, including the High Efficiency (HE) machines, as these soap nuts are “low suds.”

I just got married and plan on changing everything I can to safer, Eco-friendly alternatives in our new household. My husband is on the fence with all the changes, especially since a few are quite costly (like the Berkey filter I just got:), so winning soapnuts to try out would be great!!!
Monique - did you get the Berkey after reading my review?
I have never heard of this product. I try to do as much natural stuff as I can with the wash, but it can be expensive and time consuming. I am lazy!!
