Two years ago I shared this post: Turmeric - Why to Eat it and How to Sneak it. I make sure I have turmeric accessible in a shaker right beside other oft-used spices such as salt and sugar.
My husband felt the need to incorporate more into his diet, so I decided to take the plunge and make my own turmeric capsules using gelatin capsules and organic turmeric powder.
You can purchase your own, but you will pay more. Organic India Turmeric on amazon is $14.89 for 90 capsules. That is $0.17 each.
I purchased four bags of NOW size “00″ gelatin capsules, a capsule machine, and organic turmeric powder. Total: $41.86 for 1,000 capsules and 1 pound of turmeric. There is enough turmeric in a pound to make thousands of capsules. But doing the math based on the number of capsules I have, it comes out to $0.04 each capsule. 90 capsules would cost me a total of $3.60, saving $11 over purchasing a bottle of ready-made turmeric capsules! Not bad!

Make Your Own Turmeric Capsules - A Photo Tutorial
This is my capsule stash, stored in a Fido jar, as I don’t want moisture getting to the capsules and causing them to stick together.
Read the instructions to the capsule machine thoroughly. Place the parts on a plate and insert capsules. The bottom part of the caps are placed on the piece on the left, the top part go in the piece on the right. They are different widths, so it’s not hard to get this right
Spoon some turmeric powder over the caps in the base.
Use the green card that came with the capsule machine and scrape it across the surface to fill the capsules. Be sure you have enough and all the caps are filled. If you don’t have enough, spoon some more turmeric on.
Once the caps are filled, tilt the base over a jar (I here I am tilting it over my jar of turmeric), and use the scraper to scoot the excess turmeric off the surface and into the jar.
Now your surface is free of excess turmeric and you now have the option of tamping it down and adding more turmeric.
Use the tamper that came with the capsule machine…
…and use it to push the turmeric down to make more room.
See? Now you have more room.
Spoon more turmeric over the caps to fill it for the last time. Scrape excess off as described above.
Now you are ready to add the caps that you already inserted in step 1.
Place the piece with the capsule “lids” over the caps you filled. Press down hard enough to cause the bottom piece spring down and touch the plate.
Release and remove. The capsules are joined - yay!
To release the capsules out of the machine, press the top side down. This pushes on the caps and releases them from the holder.
Done!
Be sure to store them in a tightly sealed container. I use glass jars with a rubber gasket, like these jars from Zulily.
Hooray! Now you’ve made your own turmeric capsules for way less than pre-assembled.
