Cereal for Breakfast? Think again!

I read a great post this morning, that I want to share with you because it echoes my own thoughts on the subject.

Lydia from Divine Health posted Feeding Your Kids Cereal for Breakfast? Reasons to Reconsider

In it, she describes why processed sugary cereal is not the best start to the day, even if it’s organic, and why this will cost you more money in the long run.

Here’s an excerpt:

Did you know that in the long term you will spend more money on food because you will be more hungry after only eating cereal and end up eating more than you would had you just consumed some eggs or a smoothie? And likely you will want to binge on sweets later in the day – however when you have a REAL breakfast including good fats and protein you won’t get cravings. Why? Because you will be nourished and won’t be setting your blood sugar up for a crash later.

Did you know that you are only encouraging and increasing your health problems when you regularly consume cereal for breakfast? This also costs time, money and causes added stress which you will be less equipped to deal with since you are less nourished than you’d be if you’d had real food for breakfast.

So, tell me, is cereal really a convenient option or is it something to maybe reconsider consuming or allowing your kids and yourselves to consume? You decide!

I don’t know about you, but I just can’t have carbs for breakfast. I have to have protein, or I am hungry in 20 minutes, and I can get grumpy. I notice my children tend to “go crazy” if they have a bagel, even with cream cheese. We can get away with pancakes once a week, but no way we can go day after day eating cereal or other carbs for breakfast.

So what do you think? Do you agree breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Do you allow your children to eat cereal?

Cereal for Breakfast? Think again! — 1 Comment

  1. Breakfast in our house isn’t until 10, now that is hard during the week for the kids, but we manage. Nutrition break at school is 10 so that works, and for them it would be fruit and yogurt most days. On weekends we do more a brunch style for breakfast and yes we do have cereal. The bad thing is we don’t most times have lunch but opt for an earlier dinner time. And then cereal before bed. But it works for us.
