I was thrilled when these bamboo cutting boards arrived from zulily. Although they are no longer available on zulily (they have a great discount on items for a few short days before they are gone), I did find the very same ones here on amazon.
Bamboo, unlike plastic, has natural bacterial-fighting properties. So I was glad to finally give my plastic cutting boards a toss.
Before using them I wanted to coat them so they will last longer, and to protect them from the possibility of splitting.
Of course I wanted to use something that I would feel comfortable having my food on, and opted for equal parts beeswax and coconut oil.
1 ounce beeswax and 2-3 TBSP coconut oil is now melted.
I had to run and grab clothes out of the dryer (yeah, I’m a real mom!) so the melted mixture sat 3-4 minutes before I started applying to my boards. Pretty instantly it started to dry, but was still quite spreadable.
The silicone brush I used above worked well for application, but I tried rubbing it with my finger to get a thinner coat on the boards.
See, now it is firm, after just a few minutes.
But I can still apply it easily to the final, larger cutting board that is left.
Finally, I used a Pampered Chef scraper to scrape off the excess “sealer.”
It worked great!

After, all three beautifully sealed and ready to use ![]()
I found food cleans up so well on these boards! I can cut garlic and onions and peppers, pretty much just rinse off, and no smell lingers - which really surprised me! I have had to quickly re-seal my most-used smaller bamboo board 4-5 days after sealing the first time, and it only took a minute and was ready to go.
By the way, I ended with most of the sealer left, so I transferred it to a small jam jar.
Do you have bamboo cutting boards? Do you seal them? How do you like them?
