It’s very easy to make your own peanut butter. Most peanut butter in the stores contains hydrogenated oils (canola, rapeseed), or even high fructose corn syrup.
When you make your own peanut butter, you are in control!
I used to make this with olive oil, but I found it to be on the thin side. Now I use coconut oil and it’s a better consistency.
Lea’s Easy Peanut Butter Recipe
I like to purchase organic peanuts with no salt or oils added. You have to read the bulk labels well because I will often see several varieties of bulk peanuts with added salt (not sea salt) or bad oils.
1. In your food processor, process 2 cups roasted peanuts (you can use raw, but I find it to have a different look and taste). Add 1/4 cup coconut oil, and 2 TBSP ground flax seed. I like adding the flax seed, which is full of omega-3 to balance out the omega-6 in the peanuts. Process until smooth (3-5 minutes).
2. Store in a 2-cup mason jar. No refrigeration needed.
See, wasn’t that easy?
You can use this same recipe to make other nut butters as well.
Enjoy!

This sounds so easy and healthy, thanks for posting! This might sound crazy but I’ve developed a love for spicy peanut butter so I might experiment by adding a little organic ground habanero or other similar ground hot chile. Does the coconut oil add any hint of coconut flavor? Also, if I wanted to add a little honey, should I decrease the amount of coconut oil?
Gloria recently posted..NC Products: New & Improved!
I don’t notice the coconut oil flavor, but I am used to it. There are some varieties that are refined and don’t have coconut flavor to them (although I prefer unrefined).
If you add honey you don’t need to decrease the coconut oil

Thanks so much for your reply. I like coconut but I don’t use much coconut oil, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Glad to know a little honey shouldn’t mess up the thickness/texture. Will give this a whirl, thanks again!

I used the coconut oil to make a firmer peanut butter, since coconut oil is semi-solid at room temperature.
You can always use olive oil instead, but since it’s liquid, I would only add 2-3 TBSP’s.

Why doesn’t the peanut buttter need refrigerstion and how long will it stay fresh?
Peanut butters generally don’t need to be refrigerated. I suppose if you made a jar and wouldn’t use it up in a month or two, you could refrigerate it if you wanted. We generally go through ours in a week or two.

Great tip on adding the flaxseed meal to balance out the Omega3 & Omega 6. I’m guessing you could add some flaxseed oil just as well, you think?

Yes, you could add flax seed oil, too

Could I add chia seeds instead of flax seed?
Just finished our last ‘commercial’ peanut butter (Smucker’s Organic) and would now like to try making my own!
Chia seeds swell up, so I am not sure how they would work.
Making peanut butter is easy if you have a food processor!
Have you soaked and dehydrated your peanuts prior to grinding them to reduce the phytic acid? Also, where are you getting your raw, organic peanuts? Thanks!
Honestly, no I did not. Some day I will get there
I’m just happy not to be buying store bought.
I rind mine locally. They can also be found on amazon.
I thought ground flax seed needed to be refrigerated or kept in the freezer. So, shouldn’t the peanut butter be refrigerated?
I do keep mine in the fridge in the summer. Otherwise a cool cabinet works for us (we go through a jar pretty quickly).
That’s what I was thinking! Thanks! We’re making this today but putting some sunflower seeds with the peanuts. )
Thank you for such an easy recipe! I wonder, have you tried this w/other nuts?
Yes, and it works well
Thank you so much for a quick reply! Sorry for my late….thank you! I have tried this with almond & sunflower (though not so healthy) seeds & YUM! I’ll either add a pkt of equal or a teaspoon of honey. I too keep my flax in the frig, but this definitely goes fast so no worries of it being out for me lol
Thanks for the healthy recipe! When it comes to peanut butter i gotta have the chunky stuff, is this still possible with this recipe? just less time in the food processor?
I’d food process most of it, and then add some at the end that you won’t fully process. Then you have a creamy base
I’m excited about this especially to give to my daughter for the first time since I know exactly what is in it. I live overseas and don’t know that I can get flaxseeds. I have someone bringing me some and then will buy some if I can figure out how to say “flaxseeds” in the local language but I’m assuming the peanut butter will also work without them?
Right, you don’t need them
I think it would be great to add a few brazil nuts as well for the selenium content, one of the best detoxifiers that is really needed in today’s environment.
