Killer Grease-Remover Oven Scrub (Photo Tutorial)

This is the same basic paste I used to clean out my old fridge before giving it away. I was shocked at how marks inside my fridge that were unable to come off for years were just wiping off so easily!

I never posted that recipe (I need to), but when my stoneware cookie sheet cracked in the oven while I was baking turkey thighs, it made quite the mess. Unable to clean it before baking a chicken, it baked on hard.

I admit the oven wasn’t pristine before the spill, and it really needed to be scrubbed out before I used it again.

Knowing what a wonderful job Lemon essential oil does for removing stickers and other stuck-on things, I knew it would be great in this paste. I was right! This is now my go-to scrub when nothing else fails. In fact it will be my first choice, since it works so darn well!

I mixed up this paste in a glass jam jar I couldn’t bear to throw out. Here is my recipe: Continue reading

Fast ‘n’ Flaky Sourdough Bread Biscuits using Same-Day Sourdough Starter

Last September I posted 12-Hour Sourdough Starter where I showed you how to make sourdough starter the same day, just by using flour and water kefir. This is a super simple recipe that produces perfect sourdough in less than 12 hours due to the probiotic boost from the water kefir.

Although you can treat it as any other starter which takes several days to create, I like to use it as is to make deliciously flaky biscuits in less than 10 minutes. Continue reading

Beet Kvass - Photo Tutorial

My daughter wanted me to be sure and let you all know just how much she loves beet kvass :) The key? Fermenting it 4 weeks, not a few days. The overly salty taste diminishes greatly by then, and the end product will have your children begging :)

Why do you want to include beet kvass in your diet? Apart from the fact that it’s probiotic and heals the gut, it also eases digestion. Loaded with nutrients, it cleanses the liver and is a wonderful blood tonic. And like my daughter says - it tastes great, too. Continue reading

Apple-Cran-Nut Chutney

You know when you are tired at the end of a long day and it’s hard to think straight? Yeah, well that was me on Thanksgiving Eve. What was I thinking packing a Fido jar to the very top? Did I not realize that the next morning it would be sputtering on my counter, and when I went to open it, it would spray everyone in reach? *sigh* I guess I can let you in on a little secret: I may know a thing of two about kraut, but I am a total newbie when it comes to fruit ferments.

It does make for a nice photo, though, right? Or does it look more like a barfing Fido? Hmm.

Well anyways, the chutney was delicious :) Continue reading

Make Your Own Elderberry Syrup (easy!)

Elderberries are the best things to have around during cold and flu season. Taking a teaspoon a day can ward off illness, and a tablespoon a day can help your body bounce back from illness quicker.

A clinical trial published in 2004 showed 1 TBSP of elderberry extract given to flu patients four times daily “recovered in an average of 3.1 days compared to 7.1 days for those given a placebo.”

Beyond boosting your immune system, elderberries are anti-inflammatory and have anti-cancer compounds.

For those of you following ORAC ratings (ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) elderberries top the list with a rating of 147 (blueberries are only a 62!).

Elderberries contain antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, copper, B vitamins and more. Continue reading

Homemade Caramel Topping - for popcorn, ice cream, and more…

When I shared my Sunshine Popcorn recipe with you yesterday I told you I would be sharing my Homemade Caramel Topping recipe with you today.

This is that post :)

I didn’t create this recipe - although it’s so simple, I wonder why it didn’t come to mind. You have Sherry M. to thank for this one…or to want to slap for giving you a sweet tooth ;) Continue reading

Sunshine Popcorn

Isn’t this beautiful? Like a big bowl o’ sunshine. It reminds me of the popcorn you get at the movies - except without the excess table salt :) My popcorn is naturally yellow due to the Red Palm Oil I popped it in. I was inspired by Wardeh and her son when they popped corn in red palm oil during the ecourse Real Food Kids: In the Kitchen.

Red Palm Oil is full of Vitamin A. Fortunately, the gobs of Vitamin A contained in this palm oil is not damaged by heat - unless you allow it to smoke or burn

Just how much Vitamin A does Red Palm Oil contain? 200% of your daily value per tablespoon - that’s 10,000IU’s! Continue reading
