Killer Grease-Remover Oven Scrub (Photo Tutorial)

This is the same basic paste I used to clean out my old fridge before giving it away. I was shocked at how marks inside my fridge that were unable to come off for years were just wiping off so easily!

I never posted that recipe (I need to), but when my stoneware cookie sheet cracked in the oven while I was baking turkey thighs, it made quite the mess. Unable to clean it before baking a chicken, it baked on hard.

I admit the oven wasn’t pristine before the spill, and it really needed to be scrubbed out before I used it again.

Knowing what a wonderful job Lemon essential oil does for removing stickers and other stuck-on things, I knew it would be great in this paste. I was right! This is now my go-to scrub when nothing else fails. In fact it will be my first choice, since it works so darn well!

I mixed up this paste in a glass jam jar I couldn’t bear to throw out. Here is my recipe: Continue reading

Apple-Cran-Nut Chutney

You know when you are tired at the end of a long day and it’s hard to think straight? Yeah, well that was me on Thanksgiving Eve. What was I thinking packing a Fido jar to the very top? Did I not realize that the next morning it would be sputtering on my counter, and when I went to open it, it would spray everyone in reach? *sigh* I guess I can let you in on a little secret: I may know a thing of two about kraut, but I am a total newbie when it comes to fruit ferments.

It does make for a nice photo, though, right? Or does it look more like a barfing Fido? Hmm.

Well anyways, the chutney was delicious :) Continue reading

Make Your Own Elderberry Syrup (easy!)

Elderberries are the best things to have around during cold and flu season. Taking a teaspoon a day can ward off illness, and a tablespoon a day can help your body bounce back from illness quicker.

A clinical trial published in 2004 showed 1 TBSP of elderberry extract given to flu patients four times daily “recovered in an average of 3.1 days compared to 7.1 days for those given a placebo.”

Beyond boosting your immune system, elderberries are anti-inflammatory and have anti-cancer compounds.

For those of you following ORAC ratings (ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) elderberries top the list with a rating of 147 (blueberries are only a 62!).

Elderberries contain antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, copper, B vitamins and more. Continue reading

Kefir Pop Rockets

I refuse to buy store-bought popsicles. I’ve been able to refuse them for about two summer’s now. So my kids were thrilled when I made them kefir pops - and I was thrilled they were consuming probiotics! Read: How to Make Water Kefir - Photo Tutorial.

Although my kids will drink kefir straight with no added juice, the pops weren’t very flavorful on their own. They needed a boost.

First I froze kefir in the bottoms of these BPA-free Rocket Pop Molds. Continue reading

Cherry Chocolate Ice Cream

I haven’t bought store-bought ice cream in two years now. I had been using my food processor to make ice cream with frozen fruit like my Peachy Cream and Creamy Coconut ice creams. We’ve also been making kefir pops, yogurt pops and fudge pops.

Now that I have found another source for raw milk, I splurged on an ice cream maker and we’ve been making ice cream nearly every day this summer.

I call it a splurge, but I think of all the money I have saved not spending money on boxed ice cream. Not to mention making my own ice cream and having control over the ingredients, we’re investing in our health instead of taking away from it.

Here is one of our favorite recipes for ice cream… Continue reading
