Win Tropical Traditions’ Palm Shortening…

Yeah, I just don’t want to run out of this stuff. As you can see, I stocked up on Tropical Traditions Palm Shortening when they had a recent sale.

I love using non-hydrogenated palm shortening to replace store-bought vegetable shortening in recipes. It’s also the only “fat” I use to fry my foods in. Last year I shared in my post, Oils Safe for Cooking and Frying that coconut oil is not your best choice for frying. Yes, you can use it for stir-fry’s and temps at or below 350°, but actual frying you want to leave up to palm shortening. It can withstand temps up to 450° without turning toxic. Continue reading

Benefits of Consuming Coconut Oil

First of all, thank you to Stephanie for her patience as I took so long to answer her question, “Are the health benefits the same with coconut oil as they are with extra virgin olive oil?” This post is dedicated to you, Stephanie!

To answer the question simply, No, the health benefits are not the same.

Coconut oil and olive oil are both great choices, but they should not be used interchangeably. Let’s find out:

  • differences between coconut oil and olive oil
  • why I prefer to use coconut oil
  • how I add coconut oil, coconut cream, and shredded coconut to our diet
  • how coconut oil heals
  • using coconut oil for body care

Why I fry with Palm Shortening - review and giveaway!

In Oils Safe for Cooking and Frying - Smoke Points for Oils, Shortenings, Butters, and Fats I shared with you my mistake of frying with the wrong oils, and that I now fry with palm shortening.

Not all palm shortening is created equal. Spectrum Palm Shortening is only safe up to 350°, however Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening is safe up to 450° - perfect for deep-frying or baking. Continue reading
