Antioxidant Omega-3 “Berry” Greens - review and giveaway!

Do you eat enough vegetables?

If you’re like me and most other Americans, you probably don’t get 5-9 servings a day.

This is why I was interested in trying Tropical Traditions’ Antioxidant Omega-3 “Berry” Greens.

I had tried one other powdered greens brand a few years ago, and although I knew it was good for me, it was hard to get past the blast of “greens” that I was tasting. I never finished the bottle :(

Antioxidant Omega-3 “Berry” Greens to the rescue!

When I first tried it, the sweet berry flavor filled my mouth first, followed by a subtle greens taste that was quickly whisked away. It’s not a thick, goopy drink, but is as easy to drink as water.

My kids would rather not drink it straight like I can (it’s likely the green color). However, I found it very easy to “hide” Antioxidant Omega-3 “Berry” Greens in a smoothie. Continue reading

Benefits of Vitamin D - Why it’s essential to health + the best food sources

I love summer. My kids love to play outside, and I can sit in the sun with my laptop and soak up the Vitamin D. It’s so comforting to have the sun on my skin, knowing not only does it feel good on the surface of the skin, but the Vitamin D that is being produced is doing the inside of my body good, too.

Then autumn rolls around, and winter, and I am worried that my family isn’t getting enough Vitamin D. We switch from fish oil - which has omega-3′s, but not Vitamin D - to cod liver oil which does contain Vitamin D. Since regular cod liver oil contains low amounts of Vitamin D (as opposed to fermented which is a more concentrated form and contains lots more Vitamin D) it’s essential I add food sources of Vitamin D to our diet.

Vitamin D - Immune System Booster

So why am I so careful to add Vitamin D to our diet? My biggest personal reason is because it’s vital for a healthy immune system.

I am sure you’ve noticed that colds and the flu is more prevalent during the winter months when we are covered up more due to the cold (at least here in New England!). Our skin isn’t exposed to as much sunlight.

Find out what else Vitamin D is also needed for, learn about Vitamin D deficiency, what the best food sources of Vitamin D are, what interferes with Vitamin D absorption, and what enhances Vitamin D absorption… Continue reading

Health Benefits of Chia Seeds - and a challenge

Did you know one tablespoon of chia seeds contains 2,375mg’s of omega-3′s? Chia seeds are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Chia seeds contain the highest known proportion of alpha linolenic acid (ALA) at over 60%. The omega-3 to omega-6 ratio is 3:1. They also contain 19-23% complete protein, providing all essential amino acids in appropriate balance.

Chia seeds are the superfood.

Unlike flax seed, another high source of omega-3′s, they don’t need to be ground before consuming. You can toss them on salads or in your yogurt, add to banana bread, or make a fruit pudding (recipes below).

Due to the strong antioxidant activity, the omega-3′s (DHA, EPA) are not easily oxidized like they are in flax seeds which don’t contain antioxidants.

Here is a breakdown of nutrients that you will find in one serving (2 TBSP) of chia seeds… Continue reading

Oils Safe for Cooking and Frying - Smoke Points for Oils, Shortenings, Butters, and Fats

Oils and fats are not created equal.

One of the biggest mistakes I made when beginning my journey to health was cooking with olive oil. The next mistake I made, once I had transitioned to cooking with coconut oil, was using coconut oil for the occasional frying that I do.

While olive oil is super for salads, and coconut oil is preferred for cooking, there are better fats for frying - those with higher smoke points. I now use palm shortening when I fry foods: read my review for palm shortening here. Continue reading

Cod Liver Oil - Brands Containing Soy

Last week I posted my brand comparison of cod liver oil (CLO). In this comparison I listed three dozen types of liquid and softgel cod liver oils, and compared the cost per serving of each of them. I compared the cost of CLO to the more superior fermented cod liver oil (FCLO) and concluded the liquid FCLO is less expensive than all but two of the liquid brands. We also discovered there are brands of CLO with 0 IU’s of Vitamin D.

However, as I mentioned, quality was not taken into account in my cost analysis. Who uses synthetic vitamins? Natural? Which brands contain soy?

This post addresses which brands contain soy. But first, let’s take a quick peek into why we don’t want soy in our CLO.

Reasons to Avoid Soy

Soybean oil is the main active ingredient used in Bayer’s “natural” pesticide - and we want to consume this?

Soy is genetically modified - we want to avoid GMO’s!

Soy is processed in a way that increases levels of carcinigens, and cause thyroid problems - read more: Soy Danger’s Summarized

The Whole Soy Story - by Kaayla T. Daniel

Endorsed by Mary G. Enig (author of Eat Fat, Loose Fat) as providing “the most comprehensive review/evaluation of the soy story ever to exist. This is a must read for the intelligent and concerned consumer of food for themselves and especially for their children and grandchildren.”

Cod Liver Oil – Brand Comparison Guide and Cost Analysis

I think most of us have figured out by now making a daily habit of consuming cod liver oil (CLO) is beneficial to our health, particularly now that cold and flu season is around the corner (Read: Benefits of Vitamin D - Why it’s essential to health + the best food sources). I have recently been doing some brand and price comparisons and wanted to share what I found with you.

How much do you need?

Is Vitamin D to Vitamin A ratio important?

Is FCLO really more expensive than CLO?

Which brand requires you to take 25 of their softgels to make the 1,000 IU Vitamin D requirement, thus costing you $3/serving?

Which cod liver oil brand provides “0″ IU’s of Vitamin D (and WHY would you want to bother)?

Recipes using Chia seeds (link-up!)

Okay, so chia seeds are really great for you (blog post coming on that soon), but I am not finding many recipes using chia seeds. I think the common idea is to throw them in a smoothie. However, I know some of you are really creative and have come up with other ways to get your daily dose of chia seeds.

So…I am going to open up this post to your recipes. I will include a link-up form for those of you who blog. For those who don’t, please share by commenting below with your recipe! Continue reading

Free Range vs. Confinement Eggs

One reason for the imbalance between Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids in the modern diet is the use of refined vegetable oils containing mostly omega-6 fatty acids.

But another reason has to do with the way we farm. Continue reading
